I would say that you should make the ambiguous single-param case

For one of the examples you say:

>          for i in zip(a):

Why would you ever do that??? The only way that would make sense to me

zip([[1],[2]])==zip([1],[2]), which I would dislike. 

Use zip(*[[1],[2]]) instead.
