umm.  I'm not sure I want to check this one in.  of all
stupid bugs...  I really gotta do something about that
regression test suite.

(don't worry, the patch is on its way.  unfortunately, my
setup is botched, so I cannot test drive IDLE myself.  or
to put it another way, I cannot guarantee that this is the
last problem with IDLE+SRE...)
