Charles,

I'm not sure what to make of your problem. I can't reproduce it. On the
Linux systems from which I track the CVS repository, I run cvs 1.10.6,
1.10.7 and 1.10.8 and haven't had seen the problem you describe. I checked
six different Python trees on four different machines for evidence of
Lib/newimp.py. One of the trees still references cvs.python.org and hasn't
been updated since September 4, 1999. Even it doesn't have a Lib/newimp.py
file. I believe the demise of Lib/newimp.py predates the creation of the
SourceForge CVS repository by quite awhile.

You might try executing cvs checkout in a fresh directory and compare that
with your problematic tree.
