Okay, i have tested this case and narrowed it down to:

    while 1:
        class C:
            __metaclass__ = type

Try it on a Python interpreter near you.  With mine, it grows
without bound.

As far as i can tell, of all the calls in test_descr.test_main,
only metaclass() leaks memory.
