Well of course (wink) you also have to (require 'fast-lock).

| going to believe what did work:
| load a font-locked file
| go to Options menu
| go to "Syntax Highlighting"
| select "Lazy lock"
| back to Options menu
| select "Save Options ..."
| restart XEmacs
Oh, but I do believe it.
