Not the same thing. "a + b" is usually pronounced
"a plus b". Now, "plus" has a somewhat wider meaning
than "sum". It sounds quite in order to say things
like "I have a sandwich plus an apple in my lunch
box", but it would be odd to say "I have the sum
of a sandwich and an apple in my lunch box".
