I checked, both Python versions were compiled using these
options (and the same compiler):

# Compiler options
OPT=            -DNDEBUG -g -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes
BASECFLAGS=      -fno-strict-aliasing

Perhaps it's a new feature in gcc 4.0 that makes the slow-down I see
turn into a speedup :-)
