Which is fine if you want to write a new parser. I've no interest in
that myself.

The reason not to use C is the usual one: The implementation is more
cross-implementation if it's written in Python. This makes it more
useful with Jython, IronPython, and PyPy.
That seems a pretty good reason to me.
