I'm going to spend some time looking into this this weekend (issue
assigned appropriately. Getting it working again shouldn't be too bad
(just revert the relevants bits to their 2.5 equivalents) - the tricky
part is going to be keeping the warning of the associated change to the
semantics in 3.0.
(I'll also take a look at 3.0 to make sure the relevant test case from
the tracker issue works properly there)
