One option I would have found useful in some code I wrote would be to
extend the configuration -

class DictConfigurator:
   ...
   def extend(self, moreconfig):
      import copy
      more = copy.deepcopy(moreconfig) # Not sure if this is needed?
      self.config.update(more)
