I would surmise that most people on python-dev do what I do and
subscribe to an NNTP (Usenet news) source. In my case Thunderbird does a
great job of presenting the content, though there is no thread subscription.

Google Groups have their disadvantages too. I personally dislike "web
forum" style interfaces.
