Sorry, can't resist a further nitpick: English has not been evolving in
this particular case, in the sense that "they" has been used as a singular
since before English was English:

Attention "he or she"ists: Singular "they" won before any of us was born.
You may want to divert your energies to a more worthy cause, such as
