It welcomes attendees to step inside a thought experiment ? a Turing Test of sorts. The performance aspect of this work highlights historic pieces of magic presented alongside algorithmically generated magic with varying levels of surprise, and participants might find themselves a bit unsure as to which may be which. In 1950, pioneering mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing wrote the seminal paper, "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." He drew inspiration from Victorian-era parlor games to imagine his own parlor-style amusement, the imitation game. This inspired the now-famous Turing Test and utilized the question, "can a machine take us by surprise?" as a way to investigate artificial / computational intelligence. Taken by Artificial Surprise explores historic parlor magic to examine hierarchies of surprise and the human creation of surprise as compared and contrasted to that of machines. What might performances of the seemingly impossible demonstrate about the capabilities and limitations of both machine learning and the human mind? Andrews invites participants to think about what constitutes the experience of surprise itself and whether surprise is a unique, defining factor of human consciousness. The work also highlights how the mechanisms to create surprise lie deep within the gaps of lived and learned experience and are perhaps made using the ontological commitments and sense data of robust personal and cultural experiences. The work may also provoke questions as to whether a computer or a human is capable of producing more surprising results. Andrews also notes that, ?this project was inspired by my time as an Affiliate at metaLAB (at) Harvard. During this time I was fortunate to have encountered a diversity of ideas and research, and discourse with metaLAB members also greatly assisted the ideation process.? This work is made possible by Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc. and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. The Artist: Jeanette Andrews (1990) is a New York City-based artist, magician, and researcher. Andrews?s work focuses on the development of interactive magic and sensory illusions via performance, sculpture, installation, and audio. Over 27 years of specialized study and technical training in parlor and sleight-of-hand magic has now afforded her a distinct perspective on crafting experiences with nuanced, surreal visuals and on designing objects that function completely differently than they appear. Her research-based process centers around phenomenological philosophy, contemporary cognitive science, and physics. Work is rooted in highlighting astonishing aspects of everyday life via moments of the seemingly impossible. Themes have included invisibility, impossible objects, the relationship between scent and magic, unseen communication, and how illusions can construct reality. Andrews works closely with museums and galleries to recontextualize magic within the cultural arts and explore this craft as a performance art medium. She has presented numerous commissioned works with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, including her 2020 work ?Invisible Museums of the Unseen,? which was later commissioned as a site-specific work for the Quebec City Biennial. Further site-specific works for numerous museums and galleries include the Elmhurst Art Museum, Birmingham Museum of Art and International Museum of Surgical Science. Andrews is also an acclaimed speaker, presenting with the Cooper Hewitt, Chicago Ideas Week, Fortune 500 companies, and universities and conferences across the country. She is an artist-in-residence for CultureLab LIC and has held residencies at High Concept Labs in Chicago and The Institute for Art and Olfaction in Los Angeles. She is an Affiliate of metaLAB (at) Harvard. Illusion is Andrews?s life?s work and her performances have been praised by the Chicago Tribune, PBS, and the New York Times. He drew inspiration from Victorian-era parlor games to imagine his own parlor-style amusement, the imitation game. Submission deadline: August 19, 2022 Message-ID: <00d501d8a00a$284642c0$78d2c840$@unimi.it> ## ISSA: INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS #### track of the 16th IEEE SITIS 2022 conference #### October 19 to 21, 2022 #### Dijon, France. #### https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.sitis-conference.org/2022/contribute /tracks/issa/__;!!DZ3fjg!5t3lNLNIQXz5XQn1H9673E8Z46B71tbqNJAP98ipqE1PMMtlbeW ttX9ONbdLl4IizJ35FLaJJayvDovGTGvMdrpFC3BHm4RcrA$ The ISSA (Intelligent Systems, Services and Applications) track of the 16th international conference SITIS will focus on emerging concepts, architectures, protocols, and methodologies for information management on modern distributed systems such as Cloud, Edge, Fog, and IoT. Nowadays, unlimited number of smart objects are connected with the scope of making our environment more interactive. Information can be exchanged easily, tasks can be processed collaboratively, devices and objects can be efficiently connected, communities of users with similar interests can be formed to achieve their goals proficiently and improve performance. New issues and challenges are emerging in this pervasive and collaborative world ranging from the need for high-accurate decision systems able to adapt to changing environments to the need of protecting the safety, security and privacy of the users, which are increasingly seen as yet another component of these systems. To address the above issues and challenges, modern systems and applications are increasingly based on ML/AI models made available thanks to the huge amount of data and the increased networking performance (e.g., 5G low latency). In this context, the data produced by the environment defined a paradigm named "Big Data". In recent years, "Big Data" has become a new ubiquitous term. Big Data is transforming science, engineering, medicine, healthcare, finance, business, and ultimately our society itself. Novel architectures and solutions are being proposed promoting this incoming Intelligent Web era, ranging over enhanced machine-to-machine communications, resource sharing and processing of linked data and devices, distributed computing and cooperative systems, mobile information systems and services, semantic-based applications and intelligent data processing, advanced distributed learning and AI model ensemble strategies to state a few examples. On top of this, novel data security and privacy protocols, as well as assurance and certification approaches, need to be designed and implemented to guarantee a given level of trustworthiness and reliability on modern systems and applications. ISSA track aims to provide an international forum for researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners to share their experiences and knowledge in this growing and highly important area of internet and Web technologies. The topics of interest of the track include, but are not limited to: ### Data semantics and Web-Centric Systems - Ontologies and Conceptual Data Modeling - Knowledge Representation and Reasoning - Semantic Data Integration and Ontology Engineering - Social Media and Social Semantics - Folksonomies and Emergent Semantics - Web/Data Mining and Machine Learning - Recommender Systems and Crowd-sourcing - Semantic Data Indexing, Search, and Retrieval - Multimedia Data Modeling and Visualization - Semantics in Data Access, Visualization, and User Interfaces - Semantic Technologies for Mobile Platforms ### Big Data Management and Analytics - Theoretical Models for Big Data - Computational Models for Big Data - Data and Information Quality for Big Data - Big Data Models, Representation Formats, and Algorithms - Big Data Semantics and Knowledge Organization - Big Data Architectures and Storage - Descriptive, Predictive, and Predictive analytics on Big Data - Machine Learning Algorithms for Big Data - Big Data Integration Architectures and Techniques - Graph Modeling, Storage, and Analytics ### Service-based Computing - Data and Knowledge as a Services - Web Services, Mobile services, and Service Computing - Software Architecture and Middleware - Semantic and Intelligent Services - Service Discovery, Selection, and Recommendation - Service Composition and Service-based data Integration - Business Process as a Service (BPaaS) - Health Informatics as a Service (HIaaS) - Financial Software as a Service (FSaaS) - Education as a Service (EaaS) ###Intelligent Services and Applications - Future Networks for Cloud Edge Fog and IoT - Artificial Intelligence in Edge/IoT computing - Distributed Ontologies and Contextual Reasoning - Semantic Interoperability and Semantic Mediators - Collective Knowledge and Collective Intelligence - Data Analysis and Visualization for health and Smart Cities - Smart Homes and Independent Living - Intelligent Service Discovery, selection, and composition - Service-based data Integration - Business Process as a Service (BPaaS) - Health Informatics as a Service (HIaaS) - Ecosystem services and management ### Information Security and Privacy - Security Modeling and Access Control Protocol - Web Security and Trust Management - Fundamental Security Services on Network and Distributed Systems - Security and Privacy for Emerging Technologies - Big Data Security Protection, Confidentiality, Integrity, and Privacy - Next generation 5G/6G Network Security - Dependable and Reliable services - Assurance/testing and monitoring of security properties - Trustworthy/Certified AI/ML - Trustworthy AI/ML - Certified AI/ML ## Track Chairs Paolo Ceravolo, University of Milan, Italy Ana Roxin, University of Bourgogne, France Robert Wrembel, Poznan University of Technology, Poland ## Important dates - Paper submission deadline: August 19, 2022 - Acceptance/Reject notification: September 16, 2022 - Camera-ready: September 23, 2022 - Author Registration: September 23, 2022 ## Submissions Papers must be up to 8 pages and follow the IEEE double-column format.
