Thanks for all the responses, it's a lot clearer now.

As a side note, people who cc their posts by e-mail should stick the
phrase "[posted and e-mailed]" at the top; it's disconcerting when one
doesn't know whether something is intended to be private, and e-mail
almost always arrives faster than news.
