lib/python1.5/ and Lib/

Why does the Unix version of python *require* (hard-coded into source)
that the standard modules be located in $PYTHONHOME/lib/python1.5 but
the Windows versions requires (at least as far as I can tell without
registry changes) that the modules be in $PYTHONHOME/Lib? I'm trying to
make python available for a variety of platforms including some Unix and
Windows versions and would like them to share the standard modules
directory. How can I do that?

Thank you,
