Reading from a COM port?

What would be a good way to access a COM port in Solaris? I'm trying to
read data from a temperature probe and filter it. Can I just access the
device as a file or is there a more elegant solution? Sorry, I'm just a
beginner at Python. Any help would be appreciated.
