Newbie question: files..

Well thank you very much for taking the time to enlighten me on these
issues, I really appreciate it! 

FYI- I decided to learn python because one of the companies that I do
contract work for (a mathematical modeling company) writes most of their
code in python, so I wanted to see what it's all about... I've mostly been
a C/Perl person, and as you probably saw by my references to read/write
that it's mostly been in the UNIX (Linux) environment...
