indentation in XEmacs

Hello

Can anyone please tell me how do i configure XEmacs to auto-indent with
tabs instead of spaces?

I have

(custom-set-variables
 '(tab-width 4)
 '(indent-tabs-mode t))

in my ~/.emacs, but it still uses four spaces for indentation.

My configuration:

RH Linux 6.0 on a Pentium / XEmacs 21.1 May 1999 / python-mode 3.105
