I usually recommend two introductions written by Magnus Lie Hetland. 

First, there is "Instant Hacking - Learn how to program with Python",
which is an introduction to programming (using Python) for the complete 
novice. You find it at

There are some numerics there, but not that much. Then, there is 
"Instant Python", which is an introduction to Python for the newbie
who has at least som programming experience. You can find that one at
