Checking if string starts with list element

Many thanks to Alex(and Alex?), Aahz, Kevin, Darrell, Paul, Rob and Francois
for your help. I have learned a lot by reading your replies.

In the end I have gone with Francois's suggestion, because it is very
simple, and quite fast enough for my needs. (First law of optimisation -
It's only too slow if it's too slow.) 

I'll have a play with the other suggestions, though, 'cos they look
interesting.
