Making a subwindow from a parent

Hi,

How do i hang a subwindow under root=tk()

I don't want it to appear right away, but only when i ask it to.
I also don't want it to return control as soon as its closed, but when the
focus gets away.


please help. And if you have a good tkinter resource with a good explanation
of the functions (not the lifepreserver please) please let me know.
