serial communication in python..??

Hi!
i am new to python and would like to know whether python would be any
assistance to my situation as described below:
i got a testing box which send s out the data  through a serial port, i
would like to capture that data through GUI window in PYTHON . Is this
possible in python if soo please suggest me the right topics in python
and right material to go through python asap.
