I think what I'll do here is propose a somewhat different draft; feel
free to adopt wholesale or make whatever changes you wish.  I'll
withhold my signature until I see the final draft:

Dear CNRI,

The following attached signatures represent people from the Python
community who would like some clarification regarding the future of the
Python language.  We have been hearing that the Python license is about
to change, and we request a plain-English, non-legalese statement
regarding the purpose of these changes and the ways in which they affect
Python's use.

We recognize that this statement cannot substitute for the license
itself, but it will give us all a background with which to evaluate the
license.
