after reading several responses like this, i wonder if perl
is particularly irritating to old timers.  twenty years ago,
this kind of obscure but powerful notation (as embodies in awk
and such), was really cool.  but after a while the appeal kind
of wears thin, particularly when you find something that gives
you the same power but without the obscurity.

i find i'm more enamored of elegance these days.
