file.seek misbehaving?

"rb" mode solved the problem. It now behaves as expected.

Also, David and Gordon were right about the eoln characters. I
thought I had checked to make sure both files I was comparing
had the same \n terminating character, but I must have checked
wrong. The Windows files was indeed using a \r\n combination,
which explains the difference in file size.
