You don't say what method you mean, so I'll guess:
> def test_routine():
> global submenu
> print submenu.index('active')
This method, as written, should never return anything but None.
If you want it to return something, you should use a return
statement. Perhaps changing that last line to
return submenu.index('active')
would do what you desire.
