  Aahz kindly forwarded the relevant portion of this discussion to
me.  I've just checked in a change to the documentation to clarify
this point; this behavior you've identified is one which Guido once
told me he would guarantee.  (I was doing essentially the same thing,
though I don't recall the context.)
  The behavior can now be described as documented!
