Segmentation fault

Hello all,

I recently installed a base Slackware (2.2.6)installation on a Compaq
496dx2 with
no CD to do some python work.  I installed the python package from slack

with no problems......regular RH user
when i try to open python for interactive it responds with "Segmentation
Fault"

Am i missing a library ?????? or dependency??????
Any help is appreciated
