Code obfuscation / decompilers? (fwd)

Yes, yes, I *know* that. I also work in the real world, where the magic
words "installed code base" means that I have to cope with stupidities which
came before me, no matter how much I hate it, at least for a while. It
would be nice to be able to stop time for a bit, fix all these sorts of
things, zap around the planet and quietly fix all the existing
installations. But then again, if I had poer like that, would I have to
work for a living?

As I said in my original post, "the algorithm originates in older code
written in C." I had meant that phrase to imply the issue of my installed
base, but clearly it was too subtle. Next time, I'll be more verbose.
