If you speak true words of wisdom on some subject, the words stand on
their own.  OTOH, no amount of assurance that you are an expert at a
subject is convincing, if the expertise you lend is not convincing in
itself.  In other words, bragging doesn't help, and it probably actually
hurts your credibility.

Perhaps this is a cultural value to an extent, but you can see that the
basic logic of it transcends culture.  Usenet has its _own_ culture,
which derives from the properties of the medium, and the fact that it
connects people from all around the world.  Specifically, anybody can
say anything on Usenet.  (For example, did you know that I actually
ghost-invented the Internet for Al Gore? <wink>)  So what you are judged
on here is what you know (as evidenced by how well you communicate it
here), not your resume.  Your resume may be impressive to an employer,
but to us it means nothing.
