Is there a reason that readline is not on by default?  Most people would
want it if it's on the system.  Can't the ./configure figure it out whenever
it's available on a host? 

Is it the GPL compatibility issue again?  If it's not compatible for doing
it automatically , how would the user doing it by hand make it compatible?
