Nah, the flamefest would probably have happened anyway.  This had the
unfortunate happenstance of being a change that was going to break
backwards compatibility in a feature that was basic and widely-used
enough for everyone to have an opinion on.  Toss in some typical
Usenet hyperbole in any such event, and you've got just the right mix
to sit back and toast marshmellows :-)
