Start at http://www.alice.org/ -- a totally free 3D animation framework,
with authoring tool, scriptable in either Python or Java, originally by
University of Virginia and now by Carnegie-Mellon University.  This will
put Python and Java on a totally even playing field, and I think you'll
find that Python is preferable for this use -- but if you already know both
languages you'll be able to try both and make up your own mind!-)
