Python 2.1 slower than 2.0

I have a similar configuration but only measure an average
drop from ~3380 to ~3260 over successive runs.

My win2k box, OTOH, using 2.0 on successive runs ranges from
~5600 to ~4000, so I'm not even going to try a comparison
there.
