Problems with the re module on IRIX

i had the same problem. i switched the "re" module to
use the "pre" regexps instead of the newer "sre". this
did the trick for me, but there are definitely some
drawbacks. (no unicode for one)

i was told that the problem was the sgi optimizer was
breaking the code in SRE. i good test would have been to
go back and recompile without optimization, but i never did.
