You may want to try StarOffice -- its spreadsheet component seems
to do the reasonably-simple Excel things I need pretty well, and it
would let you stay in Unix... plus, it's free [$-wise -- becoming
opensource right now, or so I hear].

Having a good cross-platform Python interface to StarOffice things
would be a GREAT thing, by the way...
