Essay on reference counts (long)

I have been confused about reference counts for too long. 
Therefore I decided to write an essay on the subject.

I have come to the following conclusions:

Some of the Python source code documentation can be usefully 
duplicated in the API documentation.

I find the "own", "borrow", "steal" metaphor confusing. It is not 
accurate enough for me.

If you want to put some form of some part of this essay in the 
documentation, you are welcome to do it.
