Um, no, not the way you're doing it.  Try replacing that magic 
line with

cursor.execute(
  "insert into students (name, grade) values (%s, %s)"
  % (namex, gradex))

Or even

cursor.execute("insert into students (name, grade) values 
(%(namex)s, %(gradex)s)" % vars())

(that's sure to wordwrap!)
