Right: the separator is mystring, and mystring is empty,
so the separator is empty.  To use tab as the separator:

>>> mystring = '\t'
>>> mystring = mystring.join(mylist)
>>> print mystring
1    2    3

or, more simply, just:
>>> mystring = '\t'.join(mylist)
