There are many good free, cheap editors. You can look at emacs on Unix, Ultradev in Windows (www.ultradev.com (load down the python extension), or jedit. I'm sure there are others.

Vim has a language highliting for python and has friendly tab control.
I have mine set, for example, so that "every tab fills in enough spaces
to take you to the next tab stop." On all my python projects, actual tab
characters are completely forbidden.
