Is there python code highlighting in emacs ?

You solution looks a bit complex.  I'm using:
  (add-hook 'python-mode-hook 'turn-on-font-lock)
as in:

(load "python-mode")
(setq auto-mode-alist
      (cons '("\\.py$" . python-mode) auto-mode-alist))
(setq interpreter-mode-alist
      (cons '("python" . python-mode)
            interpreter-mode-alist))
(autoload 'python-mode "python-mode" "Python editing mode." t)
(add-hook 'python-mode-hook 'turn-on-font-lock)
(setq python-mode-hook 'python-initialise)
(defun python-initialise ()
  (interactive)
  (setq default-tab-width 4)
  (setq indent-tabs-mode nil))
