My fix is only good for some versions of emacs and some versions of linux. (This is what you find out if you do unit tests on various combinations of where you think you would like to run the software). Looks like I have to learn the guts of emacs whether I want to or not. Patch will come when I learn enough. Sorry for the inconvenience. Laura
