something like getc() in console without curses?

Hiya,

I'm writing a frontend script for mpg123, I'd like to process characters one
at a time, so that I can hit 'n' and it'd play the next track. I don't want any
other curses features, though, so I thought it would be an overkill to use them
just for this. What's the easiest way to do this? (I looked at docs and searched
google, all in vain).
