FWIW, Mailman of course contains code to post arbitrary messages to
newsgroups, for gated lists (like python-list / comp.lang.python
'natch).

All the gory details for the mail->news direction are in
Mailman/Handlers/ToUsenet.py (for Mailman 2.0.x).
