get uniform binary data into array for further processing

Another option, which is much better in the long run is to use netcdf
to store the climate data and use this for further calculations. This
helps a lot with data, which needs to be sliced during processing, as
one can load subslices (called hyperslabs in the netcdf docs). And
it's very common in climate data centers, so will help to share and
document the data, as netcdf-files are self-describing. There are
several python-bindings for teh netcdf-api.
