By using quotes around your dtml-var expression, you can specify
objects using python syntax, ie:

<dtml-var "includes.my_header">
<dtml-var "images.my_picture">
<dtml-var "includes.my_footer">

You should also check out the zope at mailing list for 
more and faster (!) assistance.
