oh it was late, i was tired and got too focused on the 'dot question'.

in the fog of battle i overlooked the fact that 'ls -a' is a superset
of 'echo .*'.  win some, lose some :)

all this dot trickery was a bad idea.  plan 9 has removed this and the
'-a' option to ls.

i am currently attempting a native plan 9 port of 2.1.1.  i have the
odd azerty keyboard problem to sort out first.
