Why do Windows sockets break after exactly 4 minutes?

You obviously have your Windows machine misconfigured.  Mine stays up at
least twice that long (although the first 4 minutes is taken while Windows
optimizes memory usage by filling all available memory with registry
entries).

A good Windows optimization trick is to insert this line at the beginning
of autoexec.bat:

c:\loadlin c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 ro
