SSL error: 2.1.1 works but 2.2 doesn't

This is probably the same problem as http://python.org/sf/494762,
for which http://python.org/sf/500311 is a suggested patch.

It wouldn't hurt if more people tried to understand the problem,
though, and comment on the proposed solution.
