Sending mail to an SMTP server that requires POP authentication ?

not true in my experience... the situation I was dealing with was a 
little different mind you, users were on IMAP and SMTP. The SMTP server 
explicitly requires authentication... it does not matter if you had 
logged into the IMAP server or not. two seperate entities in this case, 
and they do not communicate other than holding the same account information.
